Practical information

Sea vomit; Didemnum vexillum

Flora Port previously informed that sea vomit has been found in the Flora Basin. The Institute of Marine Research has also detected sea vomit on several quays at Fjord Base.

A larger national effort is underway to evaluate measures to prevent or limit further spread. Kinn Municipality and Fjord Base are closely monitoring the situation and are in dialogue with national stakeholders. Currently, there is no known way to remove this species once it has established itself in a saltwater environment.

Sea vomit is an invasive species listed as high risk. It reproduces rapidly and spreads over large areas via ship and boat traffic, fishing gear, and other equipment. It likely arrived in Norway attached to ships. The species forms thick blankets on the seabed, displacing all other species. This could have significant impacts on ecology and biodiversity in Norwegian waters. Sea vomit dies on land and in contact with freshwater over time.

We encourage vessels to avoid ballasting and deballasting while docked at Fjord Base. We can assist in connecting you with providers for hull inspection and cleaning.
